Ten Robberies May Be Connected
Aug. 8, 2005

Gene Kennedy reporting

Salt Lake City police have a full plate. They're investigating a rash of robberies-- 10 of them-- from the weekend.

It is possible that one robber has committed all of these crimes, police say, or several of the crimes could have been committed by the same person.

There are some striking similarities.

Many of the businesses hit are on the east end, and the suspect description, although vague, is similar.

And a couple times, the victims were females working alone.

"He just said, 'Give me your ---- money,'" one of them said.

The story at "Mist on Tan" is not unlike the one at UPS off 22 South 13 East.

"Yeah, he pulled up his shirt and showed the butt of his gun in front of his pants."

Even the way Katie Carter describes the robber's communication before the crime is similar to what some victims say. The suspect makes courteous small talk before demanding cash.

"He pointed at the register and was like, 'Hurry.' He just kept saying, 'Hurry, hurry.'"

Katie Carter/UPS Cashier: "As soon as he was gone out of the window, I turned around, called 911 and started crying after that."

Ten robberies this weekend, with six of them yesterday. Some of the others hit are a Tesoro gas station on the west end, the Walgreens in Sugarhouse, and a second tanning shop, Limelight, across from the Gateway Center downtown.

The big picture shows Sugarhouse as the bullseye. Police hoped for a break in the case when they caught Jeff Parkin, accused of robbing the Wendy's off 400 South.

The Wendy's is half a block from Pioneer Park. Police arrested Parkin there on Saturday. They thought he was their man, but then on Sunday, another half-dozen robberies."

Suzy Jones/ Owner, Mist of Tan: "It's really sad and it makes me angry, but with all the other businesses it givs me hope that maybe they'll catch him."

None of the victims have tried to play "hero". They've given the robber money and police say that's the right thing to do to stay safe.

Salt Lake Police need more information on the man. Police want you to call them if you have any.
